Glossary

The following is a list of terms frequently used in the flight-case industry, including an explanation of each term.

B

Ball corner

Rounded corner attached to the corners of flight cases to provide protection during transport.

Base studs

Rubber feet attached to the bottom of the flight case to protect against damage from the floor

Blind rivets

Type of rivet used to connect two plates.

Butterfly lock

Special lock frequently used to secure together two flight-case components.

D

Dolly

Wheeled platform with pivoting castors used for transporting objects. Also known as furniture trolleys or transport platforms.

G

GPS

Flight case with a GPS unit to enable tracking of transport in real time.

H

Handle

Hand grip that enables you to lift flight cases.

Hood case

Flight case with a low base and a high lid, suitable for objects/equipment that must be transported in a standing position.

L

Locks

Locks on flight cases, usually a butterfly lock or mortise lock.

P

Plating

The walls of the flight case, often made of wood or plastic.

Pick and pluck foam

Arrange the interior of a flight case yourself by taking blocks out of the foam plate.

Pivoting castor

Wheel that can swivel in all directions, used for larger and heavier flight cases to facilitate transport.

Rack case

Flight case with a lid on the front, and sometimes also on the back.

S

Suitcase

Compact flight case in suitcase format, equipped with a handle.

Stackable

Numerous flight cases can be stacked on top of each other for the purposes of transport or storage.

T

Tour label

Plastic label on the exterior of the flight case upon which codes/information about content, destination etc. can be written using a marker pen.

Trunk case

Flight case with a lid on top.

Vent

Small grid that can be built into the side panel of a flight case to channel away heat.
